Migrant Scare: UK's EU Membership Must Go to Independent Scotland

As EU discourse in the UK reached absurd pitches with the government fanned anti-immigrant craze, an equally absurd solution might appear logical.

If Scottish voters choose independence from the Union at the 2014 referendum, EU membership could as well be transferred to Scotland rather than to the remnants of the UK.

Albeit legally impossible, this development might elegantly resolve two urgent issues: Scotland's worries of having to reapply for membership, and Britain's increasingly unconstructive stance in EU matters.

British intentions to launch a ridiculous self-defamatory campaign to ward off a perceived flood of Bulgarian and Romanian immigrants starting 2014 have raised an outcry across Europe.

They have only highlighted the UK's decades-long uneasiness with fundamental EU values, reborn in hostility with PM David Cameron's renewed calls for an EU reduced to a free market with no joint political vision.

They also suggest that given continuing unapologetic support for the financial establishment, plus ongoing severe benefit cuts, the Cameron cabinet is desperately looking for a 'foreign' target to channel the frustration of UK citizens.

If Scotland wants to be a committed and solidary member, wouldn't that be better for the EU than a market- and opt-out-obsessed UK?
