Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Casts Referendum Vote in Dublin

Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva has voted at the Bulgarian embassy in Dublin for Sunday's nuclear energy national referendum.

"I voted in for the future of Bulgaria and my electoral region of Pleven," said Tsacheva.

"There is just one possible choice here - everything else, like controversial power projects, means dissipating society's energies," added she.

The referendum, asking Bulgarians whether they want a new NPP being built in the country, has been called on occasion of the frozen Belene NPP project.

The site, near the town of Belene, is located in Bulgaria's central northern Pleven region.

The position of Bulgaria's ruling center-right GERB party regarding the referendum is not clear.

GERB leader and Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov called to supporters to vote 'no', but before that Tsacheva had spoken well of the project, and GERB MPs had registered a campaign committee in favor of a positive answer to the referendum question.

Sunday Tsacheva is on an official visit to Ireland, which starting January 1 took up the rotating EU presidency.
