UK Populists to Use Fears of Bulgarians, Romanians as Campaign Focus

The UK Independence Party (UKIP) is preparing to exploit fears over mass influx from Romania and Bulgaria as the focus of its campaign strategy, according to British media.

On Monday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that it is currently impossible to predict immigration levels from Bulgaria and Romania when access restrictions are lifted in December 2013.

However, UKIP has stated that move could lead to an influx of 350,000 to 400,000 Romanians or Bulgarians into this country, claiming it will impact on crime rates, according to The Independent.

The party has declared that the issue would play a "significant and major" part in its local election campaign in May and would be bound to feature in contests for the European Parliament in 2014.

A UKIP spokesman has argued that free movement between Britain, Romania and Bulgaria was "going to have an impact on schools, housing, roads, facilities, health care and – I hate to say it – crime".

Romania and Bulgaria's citizens can move to Britain for work when temporary limits expire on December 31 2013.
