Bulgaria to Expand Seismological Network

Prof. Nikolay Miloshev, Director of the Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy, and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, has assured that the Tuesday 5.8-magnitude earthquake in the Aegean Sea could not possibly trigger new strong jolts in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is being equipped with 8 new seismological stations, according to reports of Prof. Nikolay Miloshev, Director of the Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy, and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

In a Thursday interview for private TV station bTV, Miloshev informed that Bulgaria already had 21 seismological stations and their number would become absolutely sufficient with the new 8 units.

Miloshev noted, however, that there were more ways to improve Bulgaria's seismological network, for instance by installing more sensors.

He assured that Bulgaria's seismological network was no different than the other European and American networks.

Miloshev said that the 5.8-magnitude earthquake in the Aegean Sea, which struck at 4:16 p.m. on Tuesday and was felt in Bulgaria, could not possibly trigger new strong quakes in Bulgaria.

He was adamant that the jolt had nothing in common with the 5.8-magnitude earthquake which struck Bulgaria's western town Pernik on May 22.
