Reactor at Romanian NPP Shuts Down

One of the two reactors of Romania's sole nuclear power plant Cernavoda was shut down automatically by the safety system for unknown reasons late on Wednesday, according to reports of the plant's operator Nuclearelectrica.

"Unit Two shut down on Wednesday evening, reasons unknown," said Dumitru Dina, head of Nuclearelectrica National Nuclear Power Corp, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Dina informed that the shutdown posed no threat.

The NPP operator also informed that the unit would be restarted after the reasons for the shutdown became clear.

Nuclearelectrica said in a statement that the reactor had most probably stopped due to problems with the cooling system of the unit's electric generator.

The news came about a month after Unit One of the NPP briefly shut down when a storm in the area caused disruptions in electricity transmission lines in December 2012.

The Cernavoda NPP is located in the Dobrogea region of South-East Romania, near the Danube River - Black Sea canal

The Cernavoda NPP covers about 20% of Romania's electricity needs.

Romania's only nuclear power plant was designed in the 1980s by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and has two units with Canadian-made CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) pressurized heavy water reactors.
