Egypt's chief prosecutor has ordered an investigation into allegations that opposition leaders committed treason by planning protests to overthrow President Mohammed Morsi.

The probe by a Morsi-appointed prosecutor targets opposition leaders Mohammed El Baradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a Nobel Peace laureate, former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Hamdeen Sabahi, RIA Novosti informs.

Both El Baradei and Sabahi were running against Morsi in the presidential election earlier in the year.

Morsi asked the opposition on Wednesday to join a national dialogue to heal rifts and move on after a month of mass street protests against him and the constitution drafted by his allies.
