A failure of central heating has left close to 7,000 residents of the Russian city of Novosibirsk to fend off for themselves the grim Siberian cold.

The glitch has affected 64 large apartment blocks in the small hours Sunday, writes RIA Novosti.

At the same time, the temperature in Novosibirsk was -31 degrees Centigrade (-24 F).

RIA Novosti also reports that another 1,000 residents of the town of Kondorovo in Kaluga Region near Moscow have also been left with no heating.

Emergency teams are working to eliminate both failures.

In the past few weeks, large parts of Russia have fallen into what is being described as an "anomalous" cold wave.
