Britain lifted its ban on shale gas exploration on Thursday, nearly a year and a half after it put a temporary stop to hydraulic fracturing.

The ban was lifted by Energy Secretary Edward Davey, who has explained that there is "potential for a very exciting shale gas industry in the UK." However, he has noted that it must not "come at the expense of local communities of the environment."

The Energy Secretary said there will be tight environmental controls on the drilling, which will be "continuously checked, monitored and evaluated," according to The Telegraph.

UK authorities halted the unconventional exploration in 2011 after earth tremors were measured near a fracking site close to Blackpool.

Fracking can resume immediately, but explorers need to operate under tighter rules including more thorough assessments for seismic risk and installing a so-called traffic light system where operations will be automatically stopped in certain conditions.
