Sofia Declared Bulgaria's Greenest City with 200 000-plus Inhabitants

Sofia was declared the greenest city in Bulgaria at a special ceremony on Wednesday.

Bulgaria's capital won the award in the category of cities with over 200 000 inhabitants with 10 kilograms of CO2 emissions savings per capita, according to reports of Darik radio.

President Rosen Plevneliev handed the award to Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, stressing the cleanliness and the abundance of flowers in the city despite the intense ongoing construction works.

Fandakova boasted energy efficiency measures at 100 municipal buildings, including schools and kindergartens, in a period of two years.

Dolna Banya was declared greenest city in the category of 3000 – 10 000 residents, with emissions savings of 463 kilograms per capita.

Kocherinovo won the greenest city award in the category of cities with up to 3000 inhabitants with 1380 kilograms of emissions savings per capita.

Belene was declared Bulgaria's greenest city in the category of 10 000 – 30 000 residents with emissions savings of 178 kilograms per capita.

Nona Karadzhova, Bulgaria's Minister of Environment and Water, who handed the award, pointed out that the energy efficiency measures implemented in 33 municipalities had resulted in savings of a total of 146 000 tons of harmful emissions, 156 million KWh of energy, and BGN 28 M in electricity expenses

Asenovgrad was declared Bulgaria's greenest city in the category of 30 000 – 100 000 residents with 98 kilograms of emissions savings per capita.

The Deputy Mayor of Asenovgrad said that the city had been one of the first in Bulgaria to be equipped with a gasification system in the early 90s.

Ruse won the greenest city award in the category 100 000 – 200 000 residents with 137 kilograms of emissions savings per capita.

Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova, who handed the award to Svilen Ivanov, Deputy Mayor of Ruse, noted that "green" was the most trendy word of the millennium and energy efficiency measures were a gold mine for the business sector.

She boasted that energy efficiency measures had been implemented at 500 buildings under the Regional Development Operational Program, adding that Bulgaria would seek BGN 1 B under the program in the next programming period.

The cities of Dimitrovgrad and Kardzhali won consolation prizes.
