Heating rates will drop by 3-7.5% starting January 1, 2013, according to Angel Semerdzhiev, Chair of Bulgaria's State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR).

Semerdzhiev, as cited by Darik radio, explained Tuesday that heating and hot water prices in Sofia would drop by 7%.

The Chair of Bulgaria's energy watchdog specified that the new heating rates of all heating utilities running on natural gas would depend on the reduction in gas prices in the first quarter of 2013.

He went on to say that gas prices would drop by more than 9.3%, as state-owned gas supplier Bulgargaz suggested.

Semerdzhiev made clear that some heating utilities were expected to come up with a price cut similar to the reduction in gas tariffs, while others would announce smaller price decreases.

The DKEVR Chair pointed out that the energy watchdog would publish the Q1, 2013 prices of natural gas and central heating by the end of next week.
