Sofia University Marks 124th Anniversary, Honors Patron

The oldest high education institution in Bulgaria Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, established in 1888, marks November 25, 124 years since its establishment.

Named after one of most prominent enlighteners of Bulgaria, (St Clement of Ohrid, St Kliment Ohridski), the university celebrates, along with the Orthodox Church, its patron.

The celebrations start at 10:30 pm Sunday with Sofia University President, Prof. Ivan Ilchev and the Academic Council laying flowers and wreaths at the St Kliment Ohridski monument in the park across from the University building.

The official ceremony will be held at 11 pm at the University aula. The Sofia City Hall will bestow awards and stipends to the best young scientists for 2012, and an award to the University for scientific and research activities in 2012. Ilchev will announce the names of University lecturers and scholars who have received academic degrees since November 25, 2011.

The new permanent exhibit dedicated to the history of the radio broadcasts in Bulgaria will officially open at 2 pm at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications.

In recent years, the celebrations were marred by protests rallies of students and educators against budget cuts. The main argument of the protestors was that undercutting a country's education and science inevitably leads not only to spiritual, but also to social and economic downfall.
