Red Retro Wines, a family business based in Greater Manchester is seeking to change UK's perceptions about Bulgarian wine, as it has become the exclusive UK importer for the Black Sea Gold winery, Manchester Evening News says in an article.

The winery is located is in the Pomorie region of Bulgaria near the coastal city of Burgas.

The venture, launched by Linzi and Colin Turner and his father Dave, has seen month-on-month sales grow 15 per cent. Red Retro Wines, which is based in Chadderton, Oldham, is currently selling 1,200 bottles a month to restaurants, clubs, bars and hotels in the north west.

Dave Turner, who was a wine merchant in the 1980s before changing career, emigrated to Bulgaria six years ago with his wife June for their retirement.

"Bulgarian plonk had a bad reputation in the 1980s but the country's wineries have improved since then, and Dave spotted an opportunity to start shipping good quality wine to the UK," Linzi Turner has told Manchester Evening News.

"Black Sea Gold was already exporting to Japan and Russia, but not to the UK. It produces 15m bottles a year and has invested heavily to improve its production."
