Billionaire investor George Soros, a mighty contributor to Democratic causes, has hailed Barack Obama reelection as "the door for a more sensible politics."

"I'm delighted that President Obama has won. The American electorate has rejected extremist positions, opening the door for a more sensible politics," Soros said in an email to Reuters.

"Hopefully the Republicans in office will make better partners in the coming years, most urgently in avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff."

President Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

America's first black president secured more than the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to win.
