Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov met Monday with Marc Jaeger, President of the General Court of the European Union, and his accompanying delegation.

Marc Jaeger and a delegation including Presidents of Chambers at the General Court of the European Union Joseph Azizi, Savvas Papasavvas, and Heikki Kanninen, and Judges Mariyana Kancheva, Ingrida Labucka, and Santiago Soldevilla Fragoso, are on a three-day official visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Vice President Margarita Popova, according to the press office of the Bulgarian government.

During his meeting with the Presidents of Chambers at the General Court of the European Union, Borisov drew attention to the government's policy of providing new facilities for the courts in Sofia and other parts of the country.

"What the Cabinet can do for an independent justice system is to provide appropriate work environment for the judges and prosecutors and we are doing this. The state invested tens of millions of leva because nothing had been done in the sphere for over 20 years," Borisov declared.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister voiced optimism that the judiciary would manage to reform itself, after which the co-operation and verification (CVM) mechanism of the EC would be lifted.

Borisov boasted about achievements such as the establishment of the specialized court and prosecutor's office and the transparent election of the new members of the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) and the Constitutional Court, whom he defined as "proven professionals with a good reputation."

"It is wonderful to hear that you are providing new facilities and independence to the judiciary. I should also emphasize that Bulgarian Justice Minister Kovacheva and Judge Mariyana Kancheva enjoy substantial confidence in Luxembourg," the President of the General Court of the European Union said during the meeting.
