Incumbent US President Barack Obama leads GOP contender Mitt Romney 54% to 39% among voters who already have cast ballots, according to polling data compiled in recent weeks.

About 18 percent of registered voters already have cast ballots, the Reuters/Ipsos polling data has also showed.

Around a quarter of minority voters and almost a fifth of white voters have cast ballots.

Early voters are expected to account for up to 40% of all voters in the 2012 US presidential election.

The New York Times has noted that early voting is popular among those with inflexible work or transportation schedules, who often tend to be lower-income, elderly, or minority voters and are thus more likely to be Democrats.
