The UK ambassador in Sofia has denied plans for restricting the access of Bulgarians and Romanians to the country's labor market.

Speaking in an interview for Kapital daily, Ambassador Jonathan Allen said he sees no grounds for concerns over the unfettered access of Bulgarian and Romanian workers to the UK labor market.

In his words Bulgarian workers will be welcome on the UK labor market as of January 1, 2014.

The ambassador hinted that this topic crops up from time to time in the UK political debate.

The statement comes after UK Home Secretary Theresa May told The Sunday Times earlier this month that the EU's freedom of movement directive, which guarantees the right of its 500 million citizens to travel freely within the EU, should be reviewed.

The European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd reacted by saying that such topics are normal for British political discourse, but that no formal request for revision has been tabled by the UK.

The right to free movement of workers has existed in EU treaties since 1957.
