Bulgaria, Greece Equally Exposed to Poverty Threat

Bulgaria faces the threat of poverty as much as crisis-stricken Greece, according to a survey presented by the Austrian Association for Political Counseling and Development.

According to the survey, which uses data for 2010, 60% of the people in the EU are under threat from poverty and the risk is highest for Latvians and smallest for nationals of the Czech Republic.

The report cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) states that some 80.7 million people out of the total EU population of 500 million are under threat from poverty.

Poverty is a threat to 21.3% of Latvians, over 20% of Romanians, Bulgarians, and Spanish nationals, as well as 20% of Greek nationals and Lithuanians, according to the Austrian Association for Political Counseling and Development.

9% of Czech nationals face the threat of poverty.

According to data of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), 23% of households, or 1.66 million people in Bulgaria, live below the poverty line.
