First Festival for Contemporary Art 'Sofia Contemporary' Launched

Sofia Contemporary – the first international festival for contemporary art in Bulgaria, is to offer to the citizens of Sofia diverse artistic experiences, traditional and new media, urban and interior art spaces.

The festival that is supported by Societe Generale Expressbank continues till 11th November 2012 and will "discusses various attitudes to the problems of our time, territory, gender, social and political frustrations as well as affiliations". The topic of the first issue of the festival is Present Unlimited.

The main goal of the event is to shorten the distance between the contemporary art and the Bulgarian audience. The festival is to present artistic works which are a part of the daily life of the big city, which speak to the audience and provoke the reaction of the passers-by. For a period of three weeks the citizens and guests of Sofia will be provoked to experience the city as a collective space that can be reorganized and on which one can influence.

The program of the festival is divided into 5 main sections: On the Move, Parallel, Kids, Video and City. Some of the art-pieces and installations the audience can see are: „Park View" of Lachezar Boyadjiev (the garden in front of the National Library "St.St. Kiril and Methodius), „Who wants to live forever" of Vikenti Komitski (in front of the ticket center of NPC), „Restart Praga Caf?" on 145 Rakovski Str., the joint exhibition with Societe Generale Expressbank „Your art on Contemporary Card" in the underpass of Serdika metro station, the video of Nedko Solakov "Silent" in Fabrika 126, the kids workshop "Kids, make noise!" in Montfiz, 31 Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd., fl.2 on 2nd, 3rd and 4th November, "Community cinema for a quite intersection" of Rirkrit Tiravanija (the garden in front of Akademia gallery), "Bright Future" of Raicho Stanev and Nagledna (the fa?ade of NPC), "Exchange" of Kiril Prashkov (the fence of NAA), "Interior" of Destructive Creation (the corner of Partiarh Evtimii and Agnel Kanchev).

SOFIA CONTEMPORARY is a new festival for contemporary art created within the frameworks of a project of Sofia Municipality “Festivals for art in the public space: SOFIA CONTEMPORARY and Open-Air Festival in Western Park”, financed by OP “Regional Development” 2007-2013.  The parts of the festival program “In Motion”, “Forum”, “For Children”, “Video” are organized by the financial support of Societe Generale Expressbank, Samsung Electronics, Renault.

The first edition starts on 19th October and is to continue until 9th November. The main goal of the event is to shorten the distance between the contemporary art and the Bulgarian audience.  The topic of the first edition is Contemporary Unlimited. The festival is going to present art works that are a part of the daily life of the big city, that communicate with the audience and provoke the reaction of the chance people who pass by. For 3 weeks the citizens and guests of Sofia will be provoked to experience the city as a collective space which has to be reorganized and on which they can influence.
