Khamis, the youngest son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in clashes with government forces.

The news was reported by Al Arabia TV, citing the Libyan national congress' spokesperson Omar Hamidan, saying in a televised speech that Khamis died Saturday of injuries he sustained during exchange of fire with government forces in the town Bani Walid, about 170 km from capital Tripoli.

Information on Khamis' death is controversial. Some sources insist he has been only injured and has been transported to a hospital. Such reports about Khamis' demise have emerged earlier as well, but were never confirmed. There were also speculations he had escaped to Nigeria and is hiding there.

The announcement of his death coincides with the marking of one year since Gaddafi's capture and death near his hometown Sirte.

Gaddafi's regime was overthrown after a seven-month civil war. Gaddafi was captured and killed by rebels on Oct 20, 2011, after ruling the country for 42 years.

At least 14 have been killed and 200 injured Saturday in the clashes near Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold.
