Bulgarians Grow Less Keen on Marriage - Study

Not only are divorces on the rise, but young Bulgarians are also growing less eager to marry, stated Prof. Antoaneta Hristova from BAS's Institute for Population and Human Studies at a presentation Tuesday.

In 2001, the portion of Bulgaria's population living in marriage was 54%, compared to 44% in 2011.

In contrast, the share of couples cohabiting without marriage has significantly grown from 4% in 2001 to 8% in 2011.

70% of the latter are couples comprising individuals between 16 and 39 years of age.

During 2010, more than half - 54.1% - of childbirths in Bulgaria happened to couples who were not married.

Instability of marriages has also grown for the period with the fraction of divorced people grown from 3.7% in 2001 to 5.8% in 2011.

At the presentation, Prof. Hristova recalled that Wednesday and Thursday the Institute for Population and Human studies will hold a conference on family studies hosted by Bulgaria's Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.
