European Parliament President Martin Schulz has spoken up strongly in support of further EU enlargement.

In an interview for Reuters, Schulz stated that the Union should continue to expand following the 2013 accession of Croatia, contrary to voices calling for a temporary halt to the process.

In particular, the EP President reacted to comments by his compatriot, German Bundestag President Norbert Lammert.

Schultz supported the conclusions of a prior European Commission report on the progress of Croatia towards accession, saying that the country should work hard to fulfill outstanding recommendations.

He was however optimistic that Croatia will satisfy the EU's hopes in the areas of justice and home affairs.

According to Schultz, Croatia's July 1, 2013 accession date should not be changed.
