Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev unveiled a monument designed for the celebration of the centennary of the Bulgarian Army's Air Force Tuesday.

The new monument on Aviation Square east of Bulgarian capital Sofia's center commemorates October 16, 1912, the day the Bulgarian Army first used airplanes in battle.

This happened at the seige of Edirne during the First Balkan War, 1912-1913.

"This monument is a symbol of the gratitude of generations for those who set up the beginnings, and the ones who developed and perfected our military aviation," stated President Plevneliev Tuesday.

At the ceremony, Bulgaria's Minister of Defense Gen. Anyu Angelov, Bulgarian Army Chief of Staff Gen Simeon Simeonov and Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova were also present.

Three figher jets passed through Sofia's airspace at the moment of the monument's official unveiling.
