A picture by BGNES shows debris remaining after an alleged explosion at a Blagoevgrad summer bar.

A night club in Bulgaria's southwestern city of Blagoevgrad, owned by businessman Borislav Nikolov, a former officer from the Unit for Combatting Organized Crime, BOP, has been blasted overnight.

The explosion has totaled the equipment and the building which had a bar with an artificial beach and a disco club. It had just opened in the summer.

After leaving his job at the Interior Ministry, Nikolov has spent 5 years in the US.

An eyewitness, who works as a night security guard of a nearby storage facility, says he heard a loud explosion and saw two people leaving the scene. The guard called the 112 emergency hotline.

Police are still searching the premises, which were sealed. They deny several witness accounts about an explosion, and are rather working on an arson lead.
