Annual Inflation in Bulgaria at 4.9% in September

In September 2012, the monthly inflation rate in Bulgaria was 1.1%, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The inflation rate since the beginning of the year (September 2012 as compared to December 2011) was 3.7%, while the annual inflation in September 2012 was 4.9%.

The annual average inflation measured by consumer price index (CPI) over the past 12 months (October 2011 - September 2012) as compared to the previous 12 months (October 2010 - September 2011) was 2.7%.

In September 2012, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages went up by 2.7% as compared to August 2012.

Prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco remained unchanged from the previous month, while prices of clothing and footwear fell by 0.3%.

In September 2012, housing expenses, including rentals, maintenance and repair, and prices of water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, went up by 0.4% month on month.

The cost of furnishings, household equipment, and routine home maintenance went up by 1.0% in the period August 2012 - September 2012, while health costs fell by 0.8%.

In September 2012, prices in the transport sector increased by 1.6% on the month, prices in the sphere of communication remained unchanged from August 2012.

In the sphere of recreation and culture, prices fell by 3.1% on the month, while tariffs in the sphere of education went up by 1.5% during the same period.

In September 2012, restaurants and hotels charged the same prices as in August 2012.

The segment of "miscellaneous goods and services" registered a monthly increase of 0.5%.

The harmonized index of consumer prices in September 2012, as  compared to August 2012 was 100.3%, i.e. the monthly inflation rate was 0.3%.

The inflation rate since the beginning of the year (September 2012 as compared to December 2011) was 2.8%, while the annual inflation in September 2012 as compared to September 2011 was 3.4%.

The annual average inflation, measured by HICP, over the past 12 months (October 2011 - September 2012) as compared to the previous 12 months (October 2010 - September 2011) was 2.3%.

In terms of HICP, prices of goods and services in the main consumer groups changed as follows on a monthly basis:  food and non-alcoholic beverages, up by 2.1%; alcoholic beverages and tobacco, unchanged from August 2012, clothing and footwear, up by 0.2%; housing (rentals, maintenance and repair), water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, up by 0.2%; furnishings, household equipment, and routine home maintenance, up by 0.4%; health, down by 1.6%; transport, up by 1.1%; communications, down by 0.2%; recreation and culture, down by 2.4%; education, up by 1.3%; restaurants and hotels, down by 2.3%; miscellaneous goods and service, up by 0.4%.

The price index of a small basket in September 2012 as compared to August 2012 was 101.6%, while the overall increase since the beginning of the year (September 2012 compared to December 2011) was 104.7%.

In September 2012, prices of goods and services in the small basket for the 20% of low-income households, changed as follows: food products, up by 2.6%; non-food products, up by 0.5%; services – unchanged from August 2012.
