Nobel Week to Kick Off with Medicine Award

The 2012 Nobel Prize season kicks off Monday with the award for medicine expected be announced in Stockholm at 11:30 am CET.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded by the Nobel Assembly, which consists of 50 professors at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet.

As described in Alfred Nobel's will, the Prize is dedicated to "the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine".

The prestigious prizes, created by Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, were first awarded in 1901 to honor ground-breaking achievements in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace work. The economics prize was established by the Swedish central bank in 1968.

This year's Nobel Prize in Physics will be announced on Tuesday, followed by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Wednesday, October 10), the Nobel Peace Prize (Friday, October 12) and Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (Monday, October 15).

According to tradition, the Swedish Academy will set the date for its announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature later.
