Bulgaria's capital Sofia might extend its subway network to reach the nearby Vitosha Mountain, stated mayor Yordanka Fandakova Saturday.

"Sofia Municipality is considering extending the metro to the Vitosha gondola lift at Simenovo," said Fandakova in an interview for Darik Radio.

She clarified that a link to Simeonovo might not be the option to finally transpire, as other options are also under considerations.

"But one way or another, the Sofia underground will reach Vitosha," said the mayor.

Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev was the first to speak about an underground connection to Vitosha, where many Sofia residents go for ski during the winter.

"Sofia can turn into the only city on the planet where people can go skiing by subway," said Plevneliev at a strategic infrastructure forum in March.

Saturday Fandakova confirmed that, after the opening of a second line in the end of August, the expansion of Sofia's underground network is set to continue this year, with the start of work on the link from Sofia Inter Expo Center to Sofia Airport.
