Bulgaria's New Supreme Judicial Council Assumes Office

Bulgaria's newly elected Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) is to assume office Wednesday.

Justice Minister Diana Kovacheva will lead the official ceremony, which is to be attended by President Rosen Plevneliev, Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Constitutional Court judges, and diplomats.

For the first time this year, the members of the parliamentary quota and the quota of the judiciary were elected under a new, public procedure.

Each of the candidates was subject to a public hearing, which in some cases required 24-hour-long debates.

The parliamentary quota elected 11 VSS members and the judiciary elected another 11, 6 of which judges, four prosecutors and one investigating magistrate.

The 22 newly elected VSS members will start their five year terms in office, working alongside the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS) Lazar Gruev, the Chairperson of the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS) Georgi Kolev, and the Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev, who sit on the Council ex officio.
