New US Ambassador Praises Long-Term Partnership with Bulgaria

Bulgaria and the USA have a long history of mutual support and friendship, the newly appointed US Ambassador to Bulgaria Marcie Ries declared Monday in her first official statement.

"The work we have done together bilaterally and as NATO partners in Afghanistan, in Libya, in Kosovo, has contributed to a safer, more stable, more democratic future for our world, and we are very grateful for Bulgaria's contribution," Ries said.

"Though newly arrived to Bulgaria, I have lived in the region and know firsthand of the constructive role that Bulgaria continues to play in promoting stability in the Western Balkans and by supporting emerging democracies in the Middle East and North Africa," she added.

Speaking about the so called Global Power Consortium, a little known US company presenting itself last week as a potential investor in Bulgaria's terminated project for the 2000 MW Belene NPP, Ries said the Bulgarian government needs to study the case because of the fact that such an expensive project is at stake.

"One of my personal idols, and a great icon of America, President Abraham Lincoln said,

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it." He was speaking of my country, of the United States of America, but he could have just as easily been speaking about Bulgaria," Ambassador Ries declared, completing her brief address with thanks about the warm welcome she got in Bulgaria.
