The Sun

If this autumn's awful monsoon-like weather is getting you down then start looking ahead and embrace the winter.

And the best way to do that is to head to the mountains for those clear crisp mornings, warm cosy chalets, deep, deep snow and downhill fun.

There's a ski holiday out there to suit everyone and a price for most pockets.

Here Matthew Hampton has a few suggestions to help you get the white stuff at the right price.

Best for ... bargains

Bulgaria, Slovenia and Slovakia have invested millions in skiing in recent years and although resorts are typically smaller than in France or Italy, so too are the bar bills.

A beer can be GBP 1 to GBP 2 versus GBP 4 in the Alps and a family of four can eat out for around GBP 25.

Andorra is another good choice for bargain hunters. It's tax-free, so booze is cheap and the apr?s ski pretty wild.

Directski have seven nights' self-catering at the four-star St Moritz apartments in ARINSAL from GBP 296 this December, flying from Gatwick.

Also try THE LECHT in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. Four nights' B&B at the Craigellachie Hotel is from GBP 436 for two people this January.

Best for ... first timers

IF you're a beginner you don't have to worry about the variety of terrain – just the thrill of conquering the nursery slopes will be enough at first.

Try ?RE in Sweden – seven nights' self-catering at the four-star ?regardarna Apartments is from GBP 511 per person this December with Neilson.

Best for ... thrills

Intermediate slopes are fine for most of us, but frustrating if you really want a challenge.

The British Alpine Ski School in CHAMONIX, France, give lessons on tougher terrain from GBP 80 an hour.

Seven nights' B&B at Hotel les Aiglons is from GBP 639 per person this December, with six days' morning tuition available from GBP 219.

Best for ... families

IF you can ski and the rest of your group can't, choose a resort with a range of beginner and advanced slopes – like SAUZE D'OULX in Italy.

Thomson have free learn-to-ski packages in this January, saving GBP 274 each. Stay from GBP 519 per adult (GBP 410 per child) for a week's half-board at three-star Hotel Martin.

Best for ... couples/luxury

Grand hotels with roaring log fires, Michelin-starred restaurants – it's no wonder ski resorts have such a reputation for luxury.

Why not try the five-star Fairmont Hotel in romantic TREMBLANT, Quebec. A week's B&B there starts from GBP 860 in December.
