FBI Deputy Director Highlights Excellent Cooperation with Bulgaria

During the second day of his work visit to the US, Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Kalin Georgiev met with Sean Joyce, Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and top officials of FBI's Counterterrorism Division.

During the meeting, the two sides voiced mutual support for the fight against organized crime and international terrorism, according to a press release of Bulgaria's Interior Ministry.

The FBI Deputy Director expressed special gratitude to the Bulgarian law enforcement bodies for the good cooperation in a number of bilateral and multilateral operations for countering financial crime, cyber crime, different forms of organized crime, etc.

Sean Joyce defined the cooperation with the Bulgarian law enforcement bodies as "one of the best in the world", citing the joint operations conducted in the past few years as evidence.

In the course of the meeting, special attention was paid to aspects of bilateral operational cooperation, most of all in the sphere of counteracting cyber crime.

Joyce defined this cyber crime as the new major challenge before the international law enforcement community, adding that organized crime groups were becoming increasingly mobile, conducting their illegal activities unrestrained by national borders.

Sean Joyce said that counteraction to cyber crime required swift and efficient international cooperation and well trained teams of officers of law-enforcement bodies.

He explained that the FBI had launched a long-term program to train its officers and suggested that the initiative could be geared towards officers of Bulgaria's Interior Ministry too, specifying that Bulgarian teams were so well prepared that they could be excellent teachers and lecturers on the topic.

Interior Chief Secretary Kalin Georgiev and Criminal Police Director Angel Antonov held meetings with the directors of FBI's Counterterrorism Division to discuss concrete operative issues.
