Don't Cry for Bulgarian Discos, Mourn Bulgarian Students

Bulgarian disco and club owners have begun whimpering again that the government is sabotaging their business.

This time they're upset about its intention to ban entertainment venues in Sofia's College Town (Studentski Grad), which hosts all university dorms in the city, from working past 10 p.m. if they are within 100 m from a dorm.

These people also whined when Bulgaria's indoor venues' smoking ban came into force on June 1, 2012.

It's understandable that bar owners are concerned about their business and employees.

But I'm concerned people in Bulgaria have overwhelmingly started to put money before two much more important things – morals and health.

Sofia's College Town is the only campus in the world where nobody actually goes with the intention to study. And that's pathetic...

Bulgarians brag daily about being "Europeans" and complain Europe fails to appreciate them. But how's Europe supposed to appreciate us - by looking at our young "educated" people?

I don't wish to see anybody lose their business or livelihood. BUT I really wish I could enjoy my cup of coffee without cigarette smoke.

And, most of all, I wish Bulgaria had a college campus where students were actually able to study...
