A total of BGN 1 M have been gathered in fines from irregularities in beach operation during the 2012 summer season in Bulgaria.

This was revealed by Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova at a press conference Thursday in Nesebar on state beach monitoring during the closing season.

"This sum is without precedent. The total amount of fines last year was BGN 350,000," said Pavlova, who vowed to keep strict control over beach concessions.

State inspections uncovered over 200 breaches of contract found during inspections May through September.

The most important among them are lack of beach guards and medical equipment, inadequate sanitation of beaches, encroachment upon free beach zones, and unpermitted erection of facilities.

According to Pavlova, Bulgarian beaches are on average better managed than last year, but violations are becoming concentrated in some 11 chronically delinquent beach operators.

The minister also recalled that the state has made regulatory amendments extending the summer season through September 30.
