The civil war in Syria is directed against all forces opposing Israel, stated embattled Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

Wednesday Assad met in Damascus Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Akbar Salehi.

"The struggle taking place now is directed not just against Syria, but against the entire anti-Israeli resistance axis," said Assad.

The axis is interpreted to consist of Syria, Iran, Hezbollah in Lebonon and Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine.

According to Assad, his country has already shown an oppennes to initiatives for finding a peaceful solution to the crisis.

"The key for success of such initiatives depends on the honest intentions to help Syria, as well as on respecting our country's sovereignty," added the President.

On his part, Salehi re-affirmed Iran's "unlimited support" for the efforts of the Syrian government to restore peace in the country.

The two leaders confirmed their resolve to consolidate bilateral cooperations between Syria and Iran to overcome the common difficulties facing them.
