Georgi Kadiev, a former Sofia Mayor candidate, has posted a picture of the leaking "James Bourchier" subway station on his Facebook profile.

Rainwater has leaked into several stations of the brand new second metro line opened just two weeks ago in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, an oppositional left-wing politician has alarmed.

Georgi Kadiev, a former Sofia Mayor candidate, has posted a picture of the leaking "James Bourchier" subway station on his Facebook profile.

Other citizens have posted pictures showing rainwater leaking into the "National Palace of Culture", "Mladost" and "Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski" stations, dnevnik.bg informs.

"Mladost" and "Sofia University" are part of the first metro line and have been functional since 2009.

According to Kadiev, the fact that water leaked into the brand new subway line in this autumn's very first rainfall poses questions about the quality of its construction and its safety.

It has been raining in the Bulgarian capital over the past day, but not torrentially.

The official opening of Sofia's second metro line took place at the end of August and was  attended by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, among others.

The second line has 11 stations and connects the residential districts of Obelya and Lozenets. The line has a capacity of 130 000 passengers a day.

The European Union financed 50% of the city's second metro line project, paying a total of EUR 476 M.
