Over 60 000 kids are starting school for the first time in Bulgaria on Monday, September 17th, the first day of the academic year in the country.

About 10 500 of the first-graders starting school on Monday are based in Sofia.

The total number of school pupils in the country is approximately 730 000, according to authorities.

September 15 is the traditional first school day for about all primary and secondary schools in Bulgaria. However, September 15 was on Saturday this year.

The first school day has prompted local media to call upon drivers to be more cautious near schools, with the Bulgarian National Television and the Sofia City Hall launching a campaign named "Stop, Save the Child!"
