The cooperation in the sphere of security is at the basis of the partnership between Bulgaria and the US, according to Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov.

Mladenov met Thursday with Daniel Benjamin, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism.

The agenda of Thursday's meeting included cooperation in the fight against terrorism, according to the press office of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry.

The two also discussed the July 18 bus bombing in Burgas, which killed a total of seven, including five Israeli tourists, the Bulgarian bus driver and a suspected suicide bomber.

Mladenov informed that the investigation of the tragic incident was still underway, adding that the Bulgarian authorities were doing their best to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

The two also exchanged views on the recent developments in Syria and agreed that the only exit from the crisis involved the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad and a path of democratic reforms.

During Thursday's meeting with the US diplomat, Bulgaria's Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of stepping up international pressure on the regime in Syria, including by imposing new sanctions.
