Bulgaria's top academic institution, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, has been ranked 601st among the world's 700 best universities in the latest QS World University Rankings.

Despite the Bulgarian state's low investments in higher education, the Sofia-based university has been able to retain its position from last year's ranking, which reaffirms its reputation in training and scientific research.

No other Bulgarian universities have made it to the top 700.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has overtaken the University of Cambridge to top the 2012 edition of the QS World University Rankings.

Cambridge slipped to second, ahead of Harvard in third, University College London (UCL), fourth, and Oxford, fifth.

In total, the US claims a formidable 130 of the world's top 700 universities, with six of the top ten and 13 of the top 20.

Canada has two universities in the top 20 for the first time, while the UK occupies four of the top six places.
