The leader of the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, Sergey Stanishev, is the only candidate and will certainly be elected Chairman of the Party of European Socialists, PES.

The news was reported Tuesday by the Bulgarian Standard daily, writing that after the expiration of the deadline Monday night, it has emerged that none of the other 34 left-wing European parties used the opportunity to nominate their candidate.

The fact that Stanishev is the only candidate is interpreted as him being considered the most suitable one.

The PES leader will be elected at a forum held in Brussels on September 28 and 29. A total of 345 delegates from the 34 parties, including Members of the European Parliament, and representatives of the youth and female structures of PES will vote for Stanishev.

Initially, the Congress was scheduled to be held in Bucharest, but was moved to Brussels after the political crisis in Romania.

It is expected that in his new term, Stanishev will designate as Secretary General of PES the Head of the International Politics Department of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Achim Post, and four deputies, balancing carefully among parties from different countries as well as genders.

The Congress will also vote on amendments in the Code of the European Socialists, and will issue a political declaration on economic and social issues. The new texts will be prepared this Friday in Brussels with Stanishev's team being present and working on them.
