Dutch Police Ask Help in Finding Missing Bulgarian Woman

The police in the Dutch city of Rotterdam have been investigating the disappearance of a young Bulgarian woman for over a year and a half without any result.

They have now turned to Bulgarian media, in particular to the Bulgarian National Television, BNT, with an appeal for help in solving the vanishing of Monika Tanova, 25.

Monika, who was from the northwestern Bulgarian city of Montana, arrived in Rotterdam at the beginning of 2010, where, together with her parents, she earned a living by selling magazines and cleaning houses. She had no criminal behavior or suspicious friends, which is making her disappearance very mysterious.

On December 30 2010, as usual, Monika took the subway to work, reached the newspaper stand in front of a store and was last seen selling magazines there. Her whereabouts after that remain unknown. Police believe that someone either picked her up from the store or she left at some point because she got a call for a cleaning job.

Her last call to relatives was placed at 1:35 pm, and she told them that she was still cleaning a place, but police gave been unable to trace it in order to find her exact location.

Her parents say she is a nice girl with a big heart and a big smile. They have not noticed anything unusual in the days prior to the vanishing. She has even purchased a new dress in preparing to celebrate New Year's Eve with them and with relatives from Bulgaria.

Her father further stresses that Monika would have never left with someone she didn't know and/or get into a stranger's car. The parents also firmly reject the possibility that she has run away.

The Dutch police have applied all effort to find her by following traces and tipoffs in the Netherlands; testing the young woman's DNA; asking for assistance from colleagues abroad, but still don't know if she simply left or became a victim of an incident or human trafficking.
