Bulgaria's Industry, Construction Up July 2012 Y/Y

According to flash estimates, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index in Bulgaria increased by 0.4% in July 2012 as compared to June 2012.

In July 2012, the work day adjusted industrial production index rose by 0.4% in comparison with the same month of 2011.

In July 2012, as compared to June 2012, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply increased by 13.1% and in the mining and quarrying industry by 7.3%, while a decrease of 1.4% was seen in the manufacturing industry.

The most significant decreases of production in the manufacturing industry were observed in the manufacturing of chemicals and chemical products by 11.3%, in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 10.2%, in the manufacturing of clothing apparel by 8.1%, in the manufacturing of tobacco products by 5.5%, in the manufacturing of textiles by 4.7%. There was increase in the manufacturing of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 10.9%, in the manufacturing of paper and paper products by 7.1%, in the manufacturing of basic metals by 3.3%.

On annual bases in July 2012 Industrial Production Index, calculated from work day adjusted data in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply increased by 3.1% and in the mining and quarrying industry by 1.5%, while in the manufacturing a decrease by 1.0% was seen.

In the manufacturing, the more significant decreases compared to the same month of the previous year were seen in the manufacturing of textiles by 26.0%, in the manufacturing of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment by 18.2%, in the manufacturing of chemicals and chemical products by 16.0%, in the manufacturing of wearing apparel by 12.7%. Increases were registered in the manufacturing of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 36.1%, in the manufacturing of tobacco products by 33.0%, in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 12.1%.

According to the preliminary data of the NSI, in July 2012, the index of production in the construction sector, calculated on the base of seasonally adjusted data, was 1.5% above the level of the previous month.

In July 2012, the work day adjusted data showed a 1.3% increase in the construction production, comparing to the same month of 2011.

In July 2012, the construction production was above the level of the previous month. The index of production of civil engineering, calculated from the seasonally adjusted data, increased by 2.2% and the production of building construction - by 1.1%.

On an annual basis in July 2012, the increase of production in construction, calculated from work day adjusted data was determined mainly from the positive rate in the civil engineering - 10.3%, while the building construction fell by 2.3%

By preliminary seasonally adjusted data of NSI, in July 2012 the turnover at constant prices in Retail Trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, kept the level from the previous month.

In July 2012, the work day adjusted turnover in Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, grew by 1.6% in comparison with the same month of the previous year.

By preliminary seasonally adjusted data of NSI, in July 2012 the turnover at constant prices in Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, kept the level from the previous month.

In July 2012, the work day adjusted3 turnover in Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, grew by 1.6% in comparison with the same month of the previous year.

In July 2012, compared to the same month of 2011, the turnover increased in the 'Retail Sale via Mail Order Houses or via Internet' by 19.7%, in the 'Dispensing Chemist; Retail Sale of Medical and Orthopedic Goods, Cosmetic and Toilet Articles' by 10.9%, in the 'Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel' by 6.6% and in the 'Retail Sale of Computers, Peripheral Units and Software; Telecommunications Equipment' by 6.4% and in the 'Retail Sale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco' by 1.8%. A drop in the turnover was observed in the 'Retail Sale of Textiles, Clothing, Footwear and Leather Goods' by 15.8%, in the 'Other Retail Sale in non-Specialized Stores' by 7.1% and in the 'Retail Sale of Audio and Video Equipment; Hardware, Paints and Glass; Electrical Household Appliances' by 6.5%.

Seasonal adjustment is a statistical method, which eliminates the seasonal component of time series and it is particularly suitable for long-term comparisons and analysis of the data.

Work day adjustment is an adjustment for variations in monthly data, caused by calendar effects, different number of calendar and work days in the month, and national holydays - for example the presence of more days off in May could contribute to the decline in the production in some activities.
