Bulgaria's Senior Clergy - 'Victims' of Communism

September 9 marks 68 years since the totalitarian communist regime took over in Bulgaria.

Speaking on the anniversary, bishop Kiril from the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna declared that September 9 1944 "was not a happy day for the Bulgarian Orthodox Church."

Indeed, it is widely known that the communist regime was ideologically hostile towards religion.

One may feel inclined to sympathize with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church over what seems to have been a difficult period for it.

However, the bishop forgot to mention the fact that most of the country's senior clergy were collaborators of the former communist State Security.

In fact, Kiril himself was recently exposed as a former communist spy.

While it is still unclear how the bishop acquired his luxurious limousine, it would be unreasonable to guess that the power he gained as a former communist agent might have something to do with it.

Kiril should be more thankful, I guess.
