The first "Blue Moon" since March 2010 will appear on the night sky on Friday, August 31.

The event is rare and can be observed only when there is a full moon twice in the same month.

The next "Blue Moon" will not be seen until July 2015.

Full moon happens every 29 days, while one month has a maximum of 31 days, making the occurrence rare, with "Blue Moon" observed just once every 2 – 2.5 years, thus the saying "once in a Blue Moon."

The moon, however, will not change its color, unless there are clouds obstructing the view.

The color can change only when there is a volcano eruption due to the visual effect created by the ashes in the atmosphere, according to NASA.

When Krakatau erupted in Indonesia in 1883, people all over the world saw "Blue Moons" in the course of two years along with silver clouds and a pale-violet Sun.
