Fulham were on the verge of snapping up Manchester United's unsettled striker Dimitar Berbatov on Thursday.

Berbatov underwent a medical and Fulham manager Martin Jol revealed that the club are close to finalizing the deal.

"There were a lot of clubs interested in him but we were able and capable of getting him," Jol commented.

"He was on my list all the time. I tried to do something months ago and it didn't come off so I came back and it was the right moment for him to make his decision."

The Bulgarian moved to United in 2008 for over GBP 30 M from a Tottenham side then managed by Jol and could now be reunited with the Dutchman.

On Wednesday, Berbatov made a surprising move by snubbing Italy's Fiorentina, as his transfer there seemed completely sure.

The Florence football team blasted the Bulgarian, saying he did not deserve their jersey, and accused the Turin-based Juventus of trying to steal the player under their nose; this, according to the Italian press has won Berbatov the title of being "the most hated man in Italy".
