The prices of monthly metro passes in Bulgaria's capital Sofia are going up with the opening of the second metro diameter.

Effective September 1, the personalized pass will cost BGN 35, while the regular one will cost BGN 42. The pass can be used for both lines of the subway.

Until now there was on standard pass for BGN 23, used on the only existing line.

The personalized pass will be issued upon filling an application with personal data and presenting a personal ID card. The advantage is that if it is stolen or lost it could be reissued at any public transportation service counter.

The advantage of the more expensive regular pass is that it can be used by different people in paying metro fares.

Also beginning September 1, there will be combined passes to be used by one parent and one child or one parent and two children, costing BGN 60 and BGN 70 respectively/

The ticket price for one trip remains BGN 1. The ticket is valid for both lines when passengers connect underground between the two central stations Serdika 1 and Serdika 2. The connection is made possible by tunnels.

The second line of the subway in Sofia will be officially launched on August 31, in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.

The second line will have 11 stations and will connect the districts of Obelya and Lozenets. The line has a capacity of 130 000 passengers a day. It will be served by 11 new energy saving metro trains.
