Bulgaria's Pironkova Off to Flying Start at US Open

Tsvetana Pironkova defeated Italy's Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round of the US Open Grand Slam tournament.

Pirnokova has now advanced to the second round in ten consecutive Grand Slam events. However, she is yet to reach the third round outside Wimbledon.

Despite some difficulties in the second set, the 24-year-old Bulgarian eliminated the world No. 87 in 85 minutes.

In the second round, Pironkova is to meet Japan's Ayumi Morita who upset Romanian 26th seed Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-3 to post her first US Open victory in four attempts.

Pironkova and Morita have met twice, both games ending in straight-set victories for the Bulgarian.
