Four men have been arrested after a scandal, involving an attack on police officers, in the Roma ghetto of the southern Bulgarian town of Dimitrovgrad.

Three police patrols were rushed to "Iztok 2", the Roma-populated quarter of Dimitrovgrad, late Sunday night, after a call reported a fight, Darik Radio reported.

The police found that a brawl erupted between two residents of the Roma ghetto, aged 44 and 32, who attacked one another with glass jars, stones, and bricks; the initial cause of the violence was not reported.

After the two men were detained, the 35-year-old brother of the former struck with an ax a man from the crowd watching the arrests. He was also arrested but resisted the arrest, and injured one of the police officers.

In the mean time, relatives of the other detainee attacked the second policeman, who was hit with a pitchfork across his face; the perpetrator of the hit was also arrested. All four arrested men have criminal records.
