Heatwave in Bulgaria Breaks 37 Temperature Records

37 temperature records were broken over the weekend in Bulgaria, with 25 of them falling on Sunday.

Code red for extremely dangerous weather was declared for six regions in north Bulgaria Sunday over expected extremely high temperatures, with all other regions under code orange.

The hottest points were Pleven and Svishtov at 41.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Lovech with (41 C), Montana (40.8 C), Ruse (40.2 C), Vratsa and Lom (40 C).

All those cities had temperature records for the date broken, as did capital Sofia (36.2 C), second-largest city Plovdiv (37.6 C), and a number of other locations, including mountain peaks.

Saturday had seen the breaking of 12 temperature records, again predominantly in northern Bulgaria.

Monday and Tuesday wind will bring cooler air to Bulgaria and lower highs to 25-30 C, stated the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.
