Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency has opened 17 more km of the Trakiya Highway leading from Sofia to the Black Sea city of Burgas.

Thus, the highway starting in Sofia has reached the Petolachkata ("Five-pointed Star") Road Junction near the eastern city of Sliven.

On Friday, the authorities launched only the lanes leading to Burgas, while the reverse lanes will be opened on Sunday.

"We had a great trip. The road has great asphalt. The road junction functions very well," Bulgarian PM Borisov was quoted as saying, after inspecting the new highway section.

"I wish everybody a safe trip. You see, we are opening high-speed highways. The environmentalists are happy, we protect the birds with special fences, we get ready ahead of schedule. We are launching a highway that the Bulgarians have always wanted," he stated.

Borisov added that, depending on the weather, the entire Trakiya Highway from Sofia to Burgas will probably be completed in April-May 2012.
