Anton Kutev, media policy secretary of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), has likened socialism to AIDS, thus stirring outrage in the party.

"I have long stated that socialism has something to do with AIDS. Generally, it is inherited or sexually transmitted. In our party, it is common for the offspring to become socialists simply because of their fathers," Kutev has said in an interview.

He allegedly referred to Bulgarian Socialist Party leader and PES president Sergey Stanishev, whose father, Dimitar Stanishev, was a senior member of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party back in the communist era.

Kutev's remark was followed by an angry declaration by fellow BSP MP Korneliya Ninova, who demanded his resignation, as well as a public apology.

Ninova said his statement was "unheard-of and insulting."

According to her, Kutev should be at least reprimanded by Stanishev and the party's Executive Bureau.
