Transportation of Goods by Land, Water in Bulgaria Increases in Q2, 2012

Goods transported by land and water transport in Bulgaria increased by 10.8% in Q2, 2012 from the previous quarter, according to preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

Transport performance, which is a result of the actual distance over which the goods are transported, fell by 1.6%.

Passengers transported by land, water and urban electric transport increased by 2.4% and transport performance went up by 0.3% from the first quarter of 2012.

In the second quarter of 2012, the volume of goods transported by land increased by 1.69 M tons, or by 6.9%, as compared to Q2, 2011.

Both domestic and international transportation of goods registered increases of 4.8% and 12%, respectively.

Transport performance increased by 15.2% to 7.3 B tkm mainly due to the larger average distance of travels to international destinations.

Transport performance went up by 30.7% in the segment of international transportation of goods and fell by 21.6% in the segment of domestic transportation of goods.

In Q2, 2012, the number of passengers transported by railway and bus transport fell by 2.8% from Q2, 2011, reaching 129.3 M.

The decrease is mainly due to the smaller number of domestic travels, with a drop of 11.3% in railway transport and a decline of 9.3% in bus transport.

Meanwhile, transport performance fell by 7.1% from Q2, 2011 to 3.09 B passenger-kilometers.

In Q2, 2012, the amount of goods transported by water fell by 13.6% from Q2, 2011.

Maritime transport, which only serviced international routes in the period, shrank by 30.3% while river transport grew by 2.4%.

Transport performance fell by 42.7% from Q2, 2011 , with a drop of 46.8% in maritime transport due to the smaller cargo volumes and the smaller average distance of travel.

In Q2, 2012, urban electric transport companies operating trams, trolleybuses, and subway, serviced a total of 69.8 M passengers, down by 0.2%.

Transport performance remained unchanged from Q2, 2011, at 318,5 passenger-kilometers.
